TPO files from online lists

Postby DSunwall » Mon Jun 30, 2008 8:28 am

John or anyone, is there a method to create tpo files from LOJ lists? or GPX

I have given it a try using word and the Topo! text import gizmo but had problems with the names and the comma's in the elevation.

You have to remove commas (and apostrophes) from numeric fields, and commas from all fields. I suggest find & replace commas with semicolons. Also, the waypoint name field needs to be increased - I like using 50 chars. There are a lot of misc characters that will need to be added like semicolon. TOPO! will prompt in each instance of a new character not in the list. I have heard versions < 4.0 do not allow editing of the waypoint length or characters, but I haven't used that recently enough to remember.

TOPO File

Postby John Kirk » Mon Jun 30, 2008 10:44 am

Here is a TOPO! file for all 4356 ranked CO peaks. Performance of the file could be poor on old PCs given the quantity of waypoints. If anyone uses this file for anything other than personal trip planning, consider making a donation:

I'll try to update the file periodically with changes to the data (field observation, map errors, etc).

thanks John, that is a beautiful creation. 8)

My intention is for trip planning. I will create a GPX file and then a KML file if that is ok? I may make jpg's of certain areas for trip reports etc. but will not exploit all your hard work in any other way.

Automated Topo txt file generation

Postby John Kirk » Thu Sep 18, 2008 1:31 pm

To save the hassle of finding and replacing, and all the other junk, I built a page to automatically generate TOPO! txt import files based on criteria you select (State, County, Elevation, Ranked, etc.):

Wow - nice feature - I'll have to give it a shot.

John - your site is FANTASTIC.

As we have discussed via email, I am creating my own site very similar to yours. I am hoping to link people to your site as I feel it is a wonderful resource. Hopefully you will continue to receive donations as well and that they will increase due to more site traffic.
