Green Mountain Challenge!!

What??
  • 24 hours to complete as many loops from the parking lot to the summit of Green Mountain
    as you care to attempt.
  • Each loop will alternate clockwise (south to north) then counter-clockwise (north to south).
and is effectively 3.8 miles and entails 840' elevation gain/loss.
    • The north trail distance from parking lot to summit is 1.6 miles.
    • The south trail distance from parking lot to summit is 2.2 miles.
What's the point?
Get in touch with your inner masochist! :disturbed:
If you can complete each lap in 1 hour average and summit Green Mountain 24 times,
you'll complete 91.2 miles and 20,160' elevation gain in 24 hours! (sorry no buckle).
You can revel in the simple pleasure of crewing for yourself, or recruit others
to assist you! After all, the parking lot is your personal aid station!
  • Monotony
  • Sleeplessness
  • Pain
  • Green Hell!?

Q & A
Q: This looks like it's going to suck bigtime - The same loop/summit over and over again?
A: Yeah, that's the point. It's what makes this particularly challenging.

Q: Can I just show up and do a few loops or show up later?
A: Sure - do as much as you can/feel like... 6:00 am Sunday is the ending cutoff

Q: Who is keeping track of the loops?
A: That is the participant's responsibility (honor system). You may want to keep a tally at
your vehicle and record times to calculate your splits if you have a good case of OCD.

Q: What do I get if I win?
A: 1st place! Hmm... well, hand-craft your own award for that personal touch!

Q: Is this a "real race"?
A: No, just sick people being sick. There is no signup, no liability, and no "event". Think
of it as an exercise in expanding one's mental fortitude in the hills and/or ultra-endurance events.

I'll do a few laps. I'm not in belt-buckle shape this time of year (or any other time of year), but I'm starting to get more interested and structured about mountain running.

Sick, John. Really sick.

:disturbed:

I might do a few laps myself, but pretty sure the ol' ankles won't take 24 hours of it.

Well how did it go? Did you really do 24 hours? I thought about you guys driving by on C470 yesterday after skiing. Couldn't persuade my daughter to pull off and do a hike though. Looked like a decent day for it, probably a bit windy in the afternoon.

I had a good time on Saturday morning at the GMC where I met John and Alyson for the first time. I managed to get 4 laps in, and the most enjoyable by far was the last one where we went at hiking speed and could converse.

I left at around 11AM, and there was overt weariness in the other participants. What was the lap total?

14 for me (53.2 miles 11,760'). We quit at 6:30 pm (12.5 hours) then came back for another lap at 9. The mental challenge/redundancy of the course is no joke.
