Brian Kalet completes Jefferson County Ranked Peaks List!

Postby lukePlumley » Sat Oct 01, 2011 9:40 am

Brian Kalet became the 5th completer of the Jeffco list on September 29 on the summit of the very difficult Chair Rocks.

Congratulations on another huge completion Brian! How was the Chair Rocks climb? Any other items of interest from your Jeffco journey?

Thanks, Luke!

Here is some background on the 98 ranked peaks of Jefferson County. The elevations of the peaks range from the 6,205’ unnamed 6205 to the 11,589’ Buffalo Peak. The most difficult peak in the county and ranked peak currently known in Colorado is Chair Rocks which goes at 5.10- via its easiest route. The average difficulty of the list as a whole is 2.3, which is likely to be higher than the average difficulty of the state as a whole but lower than nearby Douglas County whose average is 2.5. below is a list of the completers and their dates of completion. I might be the youngest to finish at 31 years of age…not sure about Derrill.

Jeremy Hakes 11/17/2007
Derrill Rodgers 5/31/2008
Steve Knapp 1/18/2010
John Kirk 5/2/2010
Brian Kalet 9/29/2011

The climb of Chair Rocks went well. Phil Powers and I took the route that Ian Green, Stewart Green, Doug Hatfield, Susan Joy Paul & John Kirk took on 5/2/2010, except we combined the first two pitches into one, making for only two quick pitches of climbing. We rode bikes to the base of the formation making the 4 mile approach in ~25 minutes. The first pitch consisted of a 5.9- OW (1st pitch of Blues for Allah), then a short 5.7+ slab protected with three bolts (2nd pitch of Destination Unknown), passing through a slot, then a short bouldering problem to the base of the upper pitch. The second pitch was short, but is 5.10- OW leading into a squeeze chimney. The OW is protected with 4 bolts and the squeeze chimney can be protected with a couple of Big Bros. We made the summit in ~2 hours from the TH. We rapped down from the summit northwest with a 70 meter rope then made the ride back to the TH in ~3 hours from starting out. We were planning to climb The Knight, but Phil just got a free ticket to GABF that evening, so he wanted to get back.

Way to go Brian! It is an impressive list and of course Chair Rocks is an accomplishment in and of itself!
