"The Sandcastle" - Boulder CO

Postby Jeremy Hakes » Sun Dec 21, 2008 7:45 pm

So... where does it show that "The Sandcastle" is the peak to the west of Gross Peak and not the peak to the north of Castle Rock (they both have the same elevation)? Are there written coordinates for this somewhere? I assume this is a "named" peak from Gerry, along with "Alcazar" and "Jolly Roger"? Are these listed in a book or reference somewhere? I don't see them on climb.mountains.com, other than elevations/quad.

Good catch, Jeremy. This is probably one of Gerry's names, and his list indicates that the peak to the north of Castle Rock is "The Sandcastle". The 7675 west of "Gross Peak" has 135' prominence and 0.5 mi isolation. The 7675 north of Castle Rock has 175' prominence and 0.8 mi isolation, which are the numbers Gerry lists for the peak.

I used Gerry's list and climbed the 7675 north of Castle Rock.

Ah, yes. I reviewed that list, but ignored the prominence, which would have explained which is which. Thanks, John. Looks like an update for the site, Mr. Kirk. I don't know if the other people climbed the N. one or the one to the N. of Castle Rock. Thanks, John!

John P (or K, or whomever, including Gerry) is there a list of these names with descriptions (Like how the names came to be, for instance?) ? I know in Jefferson County, several informally named peaks actually have a historical basis for their naming, even if it isn't currently reflected by USGS, although the USGS is catching up, as evidenced by the official naming of Granny's Head.

Shoot, looks like Pete and I climbed the wrong one. But mine has an awesome rock wall straight down to the lake. Can we name my point "Luke's Lair"??? 8)

Luke - I climbed both points because the Mountain Gorillas did and they had different waypoints listed than LOJ does. I figured I'd climb both to be sure, even though they are just "named". You're right - the one west of Gross has a GREAT view down to the reservoir. Beautiful aerie.

Are you familiar with the "Gorillas'" website?

Neat guys, but I can't get them to join this site. Lots of good trip reports from Boulder County there.
