Hunt Mountain, DougCo - Summit HP/Elevation?

Postby Jeremy Hakes » Tue Aug 26, 2008 1:01 pm

Looking closely at the map, it appears that the spot elevation of 7272 at the rim is not the HP of the mountain. Just .36 miles NNE, the topo lines show 7280'. Since they are using 20' contours in that area, the interpolation height should be 7290', no?

N 39.25915 W 104.87339

This seems similar to the spot elevation and interpolation elevation on Dakan Mtn.

I'll throw Layne under the bus for this one since that was one of his counties in the project. :-P

Odd that the 7272 spot elevation is within its own 7280+ contour though... It's either a misprint of the contour lines or spot elevation.

Credit goes to Doug Shaw for noting this and mentioning it to me. I just had time to look at it some more. Still not ranked, though.

Yeah, I'll take the heat. I have no recollection of the thought process, as it's been 2-3 years now?

I doubt I noticed that 7272 was within a 7280 contour. I may have realized that the other contour was identical but chosen to use the contour with the spot elevation as opposed to the contour without a spot elevation, even though the interpolated value would be higher.

I take it that those who have been there (Doug, etc.) feel that the NE contour is higher? If so, I agree to use it with 7290'.

Sorry if this made someone require a second trip!

I've been there but wasn't concerned about the details. I will return with my most sophisticated survey equipment and give it a closer look.
