Discuss Colorado's Peaks

Mt. Mamma

Postby DSunwall » Sun Dec 10, 2006 2:00 pm

Sarah T claims Garret & Martin believe the true Mt. Mamma is the ranked 13er on the ridge Pt. 13646, not 13,553. All maps I have seen clearly show Mt. Mamma at 13,553. 13646 would make more sense from a peak baggers perspective. Although I think 13,553 may be visible from St. Elmo and 13646 may not. Perhaps it was named by the inhabitants of St. Elmo who could not see PT 13646. I am not positive it isn't visible just guessing from the topo map.

Gerry Roach and LOJ show Mamma as unranked at 13,553.

Anyone have any thing on this subject?

Listmaking takes judgement calls. It is interesting when looking at 1:100,000 map where the whole mass appears to be labeled Mount Mamma. Topozone thinks it is something else altogether between the two summits when doing a search.

The 100k map:

The elevation listed on GNIS suggests the lower summit, though I didn't check where their coordinates fall.

This is similar to Epaulet Mtn, where the named summit is unranked and relatively near an unnamed ranked summit.

As John says, judgment comes into play. This kind of thing is what makes the ranked peak list the most important thing and the named peak list secondary.

Ma Ma - where's her top

The 13646 peak is definitely the highest.
Rather than having two peaks with Ma Ma unranked, we declared the 13646 to be the summit of the Ma Ma massif.
I agree that the locals likely said the more visible lower point was the named summit.
