Fish Creek Rock

Postby mikeofferman » Sun Jun 03, 2012 10:14 pm

John,

Looks like Luke found a missing named unranked peak, probably in Wyo, but right on the State line. Just a half mile to the northeast of Home Rock.

Added as CO and WY (GNIS has it as Larimer county)

Wow, I noticed this rock two days ago and thought the exact same thing. Larimer County's peak list keeps on growing!

Nice find guys. Digital data could probably identify on which side of the border the summit lies.

Another nearby rock on the Wyoming side is Chimney Rock aka Camel Rock....not ranked and the name is apparently not official(didn't see it in GNIS) so it doesn't show up in the LOJ database, but it is a very interesting formation, and 5th class by easiest route, if I recall. There is even a full page hand drawn illustration of it in the old Bonney WY mountain guide.

Not sure on the coordinates. Somewhere along the border on the WYO side, in the vicinity of Fish Creek. Don't have the book handy but I recall he goes into some detail on its climbing history.

There is a Chimney Rock over by Sand Creek Pass Road, but its south of the state line:

This is a picture of the Sand Creek Pass Chimney Rock in Larimer County courtesy of Tom Buchanon and the Larimer County website. Looks like a different one to me, Tim!

It looks like your Camel Rock formation is located just north of the Larimer Chimney Rock according to this site:
http://www.westernphotography.com/colorado/eye_of_the_needle.htm

I believe it is the formation here with spot elevation 7941'
http://www.listsofjohn.com/PeakStats/QMap.php?lat=41.0119&lon=-105.7695&z=12&t=m&P=300

or perhaps the BM Chimney just to the northeast.

It also appears they allow some access to the area!

Satellite imagery seems to confirm the camel-shaped rock is indeed the Larimer CO Chimney Rock. I'll add the unofficial name as an alternate name.

Without a doubt that is the same peak as shown in the bonney guide. Mystery solved, nice work guys.

Ive driven by the "other" Wyoming Camel Rock. Also looks technical, and much smaller. More camel-like in appearance, depending on what your coffee was spiked with that morning. Looks like it should be bumped to E6790, P60.
