The Thumb Line of Weakness

Postby Swithich » Sun May 06, 2012 1:11 pm

The Thumb has listed an easiest route of class 3. Is this from the saddle with Tridents and Whiskey Peak (south east)? If not which direction is it from?

It is from a Hiker's and Climber's guide to the Sandias by Mike Hill. The route is from the saddle to the SE of the peak.

I submitted that class 3 rating.

Here's the SP page detailing the route: http://www.summitpost.org/southeast-ridge/508987

I made the mistake of going too far to the climbers left on the way up and had to do a few extremely exposed class 3/4 moves that I'm not sure I'd want to repeat without a rope. Stay in the middle of the ridge on the slabs. Not easy class 3 but surprisingly not very exposed. I was able to downclimb the class 3 slabs without issue.

By doing this from the top of the crest it can easily be done in a 1/2 day.

Awesome, that is where I thought the route was. I'll do sometime this summer. Thanks for the beta.

Summer's a good time - a chance to escape the heat. I did it rather early - April I believe. Going up the rockslide was not fun because of the snow but the scrambling was great. Enjoy, its a fun one.
