WY notes

Postby TWorth » Wed Jul 14, 2010 1:09 pm

Here's what I have for WY. Mostly Laramie Range. Posting it here in case someone out there knows anything else about these(unlikely).

-----

Eagle Peak(Id 8606), N contour likely higher, maybe by 5-10'. Easy class 4. S summit w/ BM class 3.

Bears Head Mtn: Looks like 2, maybe 3 8360+ contours. No idea which is higher.

UN 10500(Id 7853): Contour S of 10500 spot el is highest. One class 4 move near top.

Albany Peak: Two 7720+ contours. No clue which is higher.

Harmon Heights: Contour 1/4 mile NW looks larger, which would give it the placement for now. No idea which is highest.

Reese Mountain. Looks like 8152 over 8180. There is a second 8120 contour to the SW. Hard to tell which is higher from a distance. Didn't go over there from Split Rock on 6/10/10. Rain.

Split Rock: The N summit w/ the BM is higher, but the lower S summit is more interesting to climb. Still only class 3+ if on route. Prom on the map is about right, 100'. Does this merit inclusion? Generally I left stuff like this out with the original CO lists in '05-'06. But sometimes unranked subsummits are included, as w/ Sheep Mountain in CO:

Thanks Tim. There are two I didn't change:
Harmon Heights - keeping where the name is until other HP is verified.
Split Rock - Name is not printed twice as with Sheep Mountain In CO, however, Sheep Mountain North should probably be thrown out since there is only one GNIS entry for it. Thoughts?

Guess the name placement on the map supersedes the largest contour idea, seems OK to me if the actual HP is not known.

Sheep Mountain shows up twice only since it is on the edge of two quads, so I'd agree on getting rid of the N summit.

Even though the S summit of Split Rock was pretty cool, it'd probably be better to limit or remove entirely unranked sub-summits which aren't marked on the map with something more than a closed contour. Big time :worms: trying to list all the insignificant unmarked sub-summits. They are still available for climbing, just not logging.

Might want to add Gold Hill as well:

Phantom Lake quad, one closed contour, looks like 10140. Placer gold is said to have been found in nearby Brush Creek.

Couple more(Park Co):

12028->12060.
9700->9718. See USGS map. HP to W of spot el, near middle of contour.
9424-See USGS map. Saddle el has a spot of 9138 :rip:
9780- E contour is highest. Also the USGS map has a saddle spot of 9470. The top of Pat Ohara Mtn(.75 mi east) is labeled Pat Ohara Peak. So 9780 could be considered Pat Ohara Mtn West in a sense.
