Cathedral Spires, Black Hills SD

Many of the narrow spires in the area are not resolved on maps despite their significant prominence. Not sure if you want to add summits based on my limited info, but here is what I learned about 3 that get cimbed regularly (via gps coords, length of pitches/raps):

Spire One: 43.8486, -103.5347, 170 ft prominence w/ respect to Spire Two, easiest route 5.7+
Spire Two: 43.8485, -103.5346, 180 ft prominence w/ respect to Spire Three, easiest route 5.6
Spire Four: 43.84889, -103.5335, unknown prominence, easiest route 5.4

I can certainly add these, provided there is some reference for the names like a guidebook. I asked Jeremy a minute ago if he's seen these since I think he has some SD climbing books.

I will get into my books and let you know what spires appear in what book. :wiz: I do know that the "Ten Pins" (not discussed above) seem to be rather vague and it depends on who you ask which Ten Pins (spires) are which; seems like everyone will have a different answer. :worms:

I'll research it as soon as I can, possibly tonight.

How's this?

Strangely, the other 4 books I have don't show the spires very well. Also visible are Spire Three, South Tower, Khayyam Spire. Page 42 shows the Gruesome Twosome spire followed by Spire Five. The next few pages (visible in the link preview) show the spires in other views. Would be great to have good pics of these on LoJ.

Also of note, looks like the Dallymore Spur is a significant spur best visible in this book on page 299. Not sure the coords work well with the map.

Coords given in the book put it here: http://listsofjohn.com/qmap?lat=43.8782 ... 12&t=u&P=0

Dallymore Spur appears this book, too, but the picture isn't as good:

Interestingly, Spires One through Spire Nine appear in that book (Conn's).

Looks like a boatload of adds can be culled from this:
http://www.billandcori.com/blackhills/bh_climb.htm (see map section at the bottom - 217 features, 95 features for C. Spires area alone).

I believe the maps being referenced are from Touch the Sky

Some very helpful maps for locating spires, particularly the triangles to indicate the HP of the formation groups.

So this looks like a rather large project. I'll try to get the numbered spires in first.

Sadly, I do not own a copy of that book, nor is it in my budget to buy one.

This book:

has some of the best photos. Great book, not a lot of history, but wonderful photos as well. Seems most of the needles climbed are those 1-4 and South Tower.

Added Spires 1-4 (Spire Four is the HP of the Cathedral Spires), and "South Tower". The map contours are very off for every formation, and I've assumed the HP is a full contour higher than what the east contours on the map indicate.

Nice work John! I just love all your additions! Jeremy it would be cool if you can add some pictures of the listed spires and maybe even climb one or two of them. I know they aren't ranked but that never seems to detour you! jp

I would love to, believe me. Ranked shpanked, I say. Might be a while before I get up there to do those, though.
