Tyndall Glacier Accidents



August 21, 1958

A woman by the last name of Gillette was climbing with her husband Philip when she slipped while descending Tyndall Glacier. She was unable to self-arrest, resulting in a fatal impact into the rocks at its base.

November 9, 1991

Dan Hepburn was swept away an estimated 1500 feet in an avalanche on an ascent up Taylor Glacier. Hepburn was buried waist-deep, suffering a broken arm. He was able to hike out under his own power.

June 30, 2002

A senior CMC BMS instructor fell into an uncontrolled slide and impacted rock:
"On 6/30/2002 a climber ascending a steeper portion of the glacier suffered an unroped 150 foot slide/fall into some rocks. Injuries were contusions, abrasions and a crampon puncture to victim's calf. Victim was able to self-evacuate with the assistance of the rest of his party."
